Kooks Not Welcome
I have not yet developed a method for the quick and reliable identification of kooks, but I may begin working on it soon. Perhaps I will call it the Fawkes Protocol. The local church is a precious gift from God. It is place where Christ’s sheep should be able to rest each week in the green pastures of God’s truth and beside the still waters of his grace.
As I sipped my morning coffee on a brisk November morn, I reviewed the day’s schedule and noticed one appointment that iCalendar had scheduled without my consent: Election Day
Ignoring that intrusion for the moment, I proceeded to browse the latest headlines and, as usual, it was all bad news: War, terrorism, hate, bigotry, conspiracies, politics, scandals, indictments, etc.
After that, I visited a few Christian sites to see what was happening in the Kingdom of God and, sadly, I found much of the same (without the war and terrorism, of course). Everyone is on edge and that is a very dangerous place to be.
Two days prior was Guy Fawkes Day, so I made the mental connection: Our culture seems to be sitting on a proverbial stockpile of explosives. Whether that is due to some kind of plot or not, I will leave to the conspiracy theorists to debate. My only concern is not being around when it finally explodes.
I cannot, of course, leave the world; but I can take calculated measures to keep the world at a safe distance. You might want to do the same.
This begins in the heart as we set our minds on things above, remember that the Lord is at hand, and meditate upon worthy things.
The home must also be guarded. Turn off the news. Better yet, get rid of your television set all together. And as for that device in your pocket, try using it as an actual phone. Call someone and have a conversation.

A Fellow Pastor’s Exhortation to Greg Johnson: Repent
His basic position is that he was born gay, there’s little chance of him ever changing from that orientation and so he somehow deserves to be in the pulpits of Jesus Christ’s Church, and that we actually need to have more men like himself in pulpits. He says he needs to be authentic to the way he was born, and anyone who commends him to Christ to change his sexual orientation is being abusive and unloving toward him.
Prior to this I have not spoken publicly about the Presbyterian Church in America’s (PCA) internal debate over same-sex attraction and Pastor Greg Johnson’s efforts to see to it that more same sex-attracted men end up in the pulpits of the PCA. I have not spoken publicly because I did not believe it appropriate to publicly air this matter in front of the secular world.
Well, recently Greg Johnson published a book and has begun a series of interviews with secular TV networks and News/journalism Internet outlets promoting the idea that same-sex attraction is permissible in the church so long as the gay person does not act and consummate his / her desire with a sexual act.
As such now I can no longer stay silent, and I must publicly repudiate and refute Greg Johnson’s theological error and abominable sinful attitudes.
His basic position is that he was born gay, there’s little chance of him ever changing from that orientation, and so he somehow deserves to be in the pulpits of Jesus Christ’s Church, and that we actually need to have more men like himself in pulpits. He says he needs to be authentic to the way he was born, and anyone who commends him to Christ to change his sexual orientation is being abusive and unloving toward him.
However, Matthew 5:28 makes it clear that the mere desire for any sexual sin is itself sexual sin. The Bible teaches that looking and lusting, that desiring what God has forbidden, without acting or committing a sexual act satiating the desire is itself sin. This would necessarily include both lustfully looking at a woman by a man and any homosexual/lesbian sexual desire. Mr. Johnson is wrong. His teaching is theological error. He himself is showing himself to be a false prophet.
And in a most recent interview he has sinfully and publicly demeaned, insulted, belittled, and smeared other PCA ministers who we’re trying to have a private discussion internal to the PCA with him; instead, his desire was to go to the secular media to employ their sympathies to arm twist, shame, and silence the stand of these fellow elders for Scripture and godliness.
So permit me to publicly speak straightforwardly about this issue:
My every impulse to sin is just me wanting to be me… to be “authentic” … to NOT deny the way I was born—a sinner.
And every commandment of God regarding my sexuality and everything else is just God wanting me to be like Jesus and not be like me.
Regarding Greg Johnson let me say:
This is why I say Greg Johnson and the Revoice crowd don’t understand the most basic aspects of Christianity or the Gospel, and in no way are qualified to be anywhere near the pulpit…. other than kneeling in front of it and repenting.

Letter from Scotland 1 – The Church of Scotland – the Final Nail?
I remember when John Chalmers, clerk of the General Assembly stated: “We had a debate which made very clear that we were not interfering with our theological definition of marriage and were not going to the place where ministers or deacons could themselves conducting same sex marriages.”. He lied. Plain and simple. He knew that this was a step on the road to conducting same sex marriages, and that the theological definition of marriage was being changed. And no one called him out on it. Although yours truly tried – and was roundly castigated for being ‘unChristian.’
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It’s a joy to be back in my native land – the most beautiful country in the world! But there is also a sadness and sorrow. Not just because I tested positive for Covid on landing – and now have the most miserable man flu! The main sorrow I had was reading the following in The Courier on arrival – as the Church of Scotland prepares to hammer the final nail into its own coffin.
“Just this week, the Church of Scotland announced that 29 of its presbyteries were in favour of ministers and deacons conducting the ceremonies of same sex couples should they so wish. The Church is a democratic institution so the final word will go the General Assembly next month. But assuming it’s a Yes, the words “I do” could be said by same sex couples in churches by the summer….” These were part of an article written by Kezia Dugdale, former Labour leader in Scotland. She went on to exult “That is absolutely phenomenal social progress by any measure.”
That’s an interesting but not unsurprising perspective from an atheist, who has no love for the Gospel. However, the truth is precisely the opposite. This is not progress. This is the Church of Scotland aiding and abetting Scottish society as it reverts, not just to pre-Reformation days, but to pre-Christian days. My beloved nation is regressing back into the pagan world. What used to be the National Church is meekly following whatever path the Regressives lead us – it would be inaccurate to say that they are leading – they have neither the initiative nor courage to lead.
I am not surprised at the Church of Scotland going this route – despite all the lies from leading clergy about how this would not be the case. I always thought that it was the deceit and misleading the Lord’s people that was unchristian – not pointing out that deceit. Indeed, Christ himself was not averse to pointing out to some religious leaders that they belonged to their father the devil, when he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
Kezia’s Perspective
Kezia Dugdale also confirmed what we all, (except some gullible evangelicals), knew – that the purpose of the C of S leadership all along was to recognise same sex marriage – but to fool as many evangelicals as possible into thinking that we were being listened to, so that they could keep us on board. (I use ‘us’ because I identify with evangelicals as my brothers and sisters – whatever the denomination). Dugdale speaks about how she had conversations with Rev. Lorna Hood moderator of the General Assembly in 2013, who promised her that SSM would come.
“I just couldn’t understand it, especially as all the Christians I knew supported it. They believed in marriage as a union of two people rooted in love, respect and commitment and wanted it for everyone.” This shows both the limited understanding of Christianity and of marriage. If marriage is for everyone why limit it to two people? And does that include incestuous marriage – if for example two sisters love, respect and commit to one another, why shouldn’t they get married? It is telling that Lorna Hood was unable to help Kezia with her understanding – except to point out that some people were more ‘traditional’. No, Lorna – it has nothing to do with tradition – and everything to do with Scripture. But therein lies the problem for the Church of Scotland – it has rejected the Bible as its authoritative standard. I recall sitting in the Assembly as the Bible was openly and publicly mocked – to laughter from the commissioners and not a word of rebuke from the leadership.
A Lost Battle
I have been involved with this issue for many years. And I have to say that I now feel completely vindicated. But it is a battle that has left many wounds. I think of Dominic Smart – a Church of Scotland minister who paid a massive price for his faithfulness. He was truly a prophet without honour in his own land. I miss him. I recall an amazing anonymous letter from 15 Glasgow presbytery ‘evangelicals’, who attacked me – and Willie Phillip – another faithful minister who paid the price. I think of Jeremy Middleton who gave the best speech I have ever heard at any Assembly and gave me a faint hope that things might be turned around – only to have that hope dashed by a couple of evangelicals running round, persuading others to play the political game and go along with the establishment. I think of Albert Bogle’s ‘compromise’ motion, which was not a compromise at all – and which gave the progressives everything they wanted. I think of John McPake promising me that the evangelicals had a plan – and that if I just kept quiet, I would see them work it out. Part of that plan was for Angus Morrison to become an evangelical moderator. That worked – in that he became moderator. But he ended up being honoured by the University of Glasgow for ‘changing attitudes to same sex relationships in the Church of Scotland”.

The Seven Crowns of Christ’s Sacrifice
The greatest act of love ever displayed in all of human history is found in Jesus Christ. If you are looking for the proof of God’s love for sinners, even for you, then look to Christ. As those who have received Christ’s love, may we crown him with many crowns and devote our lives to living out his command, “Love one another as I have loved you.”
On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus gave a parting command to his disciples, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” But love is not an abstract, sentimental idea. Jesus makes it clear that love is shown most powerfully in the act of self-sacrifice, even to the point of death. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” But Jesus wasn’t only talking about what we must do. He was also pointing to his death for us, the greatest of all acts of love.
Preaching on this text in 1873, Spurgeon gives seven reasons for why Christ’s laying down his life was infinitely greater and more glorious than any act of sacrifice that has ever been performed. For each one of these, Spurgeon calls for crowns of glory and worship to be placed upon Christ’s head.
Crown #1: Jesus was immortal and never needed to die
Christ’s death was utterly unique because it was an entirely voluntary act of love.
When a man lays down his life for his friend, he does not lay down what he could keep altogether; he could only have kept it for a while, even if he had lived as long as mortals can, till grey hairs are on their head, he must at last have yielded to the arrows of death. A substitutionary death for love’s sake in ordinary cases would be but a slightly premature payment of that debt of nature which must be paid by all. But such is not the case with Jesus. Jesus needed not die at all; there was no ground or reason why he should die apart from his laying down his life in the room and place and stead of his friends.
Crown #2: Jesus sacrificed himself knowing he had no chance of escape
Some people may volunteer to die for another and yet may still have hope that they will escape death. This was not the case for Jesus.
He knew that if he was to give a ransom for our souls he had no loophole for escape, he must surely die. Die he or his people must, there was no other alternative. If we were to escape from the pit through him, he must perish in the pit himself; there was no hope for him, there was no way by which the cup could pass from him. Men have risked their lives for their friends bravely; perhaps had they been certain that the risk would have ended in death they would have hesitated; Jesus was certain that our salvation involved death to him, the cup must be drained to the bottom, he must endure the mortal agony, and in all the sufferings of death extreme he must not be spared one jot or little; yet deliberately, for our sakes, he espoused death that he might espouse us.
Crown #3: Jesus’ sacrifice was motivated by pure, unmingled love
One person might die for another out of a sense of duty or gratitude or debt. But Jesus had no such motivation. His death was an act of pure love.
