In Defense of Small Groups

Jimmy is back to talk about The Masked Singer, but Joe works hard at keeping him focused on the value of small groups, a Twitter conversation started by Pastor Steve Meister, and the puritan discipline of Holy Conference. Flavel on Thankfulness

Happy Thanksgiving! In light of the American holiday, but because of the biblical call to praise god in thankfulness, Joe and Jimmy read from one of John Flavel’s sermon, The Seaman’s Return. Flavel argues that the thankful person 1) is an observer of the mercies he has received, 2) considers God’s mercies in their natures, degrees, seasons, and manner of conveyance, 3) duly estimates and values his mercies, 4) faithfully records His mercies, 5) is suitably affected with the mercies he receives, and 6) orders his conversation suitably to the engagements that his mercies have put him under. You can read his sermon here for free. Or, do what we did and the 6 volume set of The Works of John Flavel published by Banner of Truth.
