The 1689 on God's Law (19.6)

Joe and Jimmy are back to talk about the Law of God from the 1689 Confession (Chapter 19, paragraph 6). What does it mean when we say we are “not under law but under grace,” and how does this relate to the use of the law in the life of the Christian? Does a Christian have to keep the law? Plus Joe doesn’t know how to do Labor Day. To get into the Ten Commandments we encourage our listeners to check out Thomas Watson treatment of the Big Ten here. Our Sponsor Together for the Gospel is going down April 14-16, 2020. Registration opens up on September 3rd, and our listeners have been given a special discount code. Spirit and Truth

Jimmy is back from Jamaica, and Les Lanphere is back on the mic with the guys to talk about his upcoming documentary, Spirit and Truth. Joe and Jimmy ask Les about “Reformed worship”, the problems in many evangelical worship services, and a lot more. Plus, Les looks like Kirk Cameron, and Jimmy gets water in his ear and is rushed to the hospital. If you haven’t seen his first documentary, be sure to check out Calvinist. And as we wait for his new doc, Spirit and Truth, to be released sign up for all the news and updates over at the Spirit and Truth website. The 1689 on God's Law (19.4-5)

The guys are back in The 1689 Confession, Chapter 19 paragraphs 4 and 5, discussing the Law of God. This time Joe and Jimmy hit the civil laws of the Old Covenant and go back to the moral law as perpetually blinding for the church, even under the New Covenant. Plus, does Jimmy fly in First Class while his wife and kids fly among the commoners? To go deeper into the moral, civil, and ceremonial divisions of the law, pick up From the Finger of God: The Biblical and Theological Basis for the Threefold Division of the Law by Philip Ross. You're Not The Hero

Jimmy brings up one of Joe’s tweets related to contending for the faith, and they spend some time discussing the meaning behind it. Too often we think of ourselves as the hero in the midst of conflict, which can lead us to think of opponents as villains, and excuse our methods or approach even if wrong. Those who think of themselves as the hero will lack the humility needed to honor the Lord.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/doctrine-and-devotion/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

The 1689 on God's Law (19.3)

The guys step into paragraph 3 of Chapter 19 of the 1689 Baptist Confession, focusing on the ceremonial law of the Old Covenant. Why don’t we keep the ceremonial laws today? How did they prefigure Christ? Joe and Jimmy take a look at the tabernacle and how it ultimately points to Jesus Christ. A Back to School Prayer

The guys are back, school is in session, and Joe doesn’t know Roman numerals. On this episode the guys talk through John Calvin’s Prayer on Preparing to Go to School. It’s a beautiful and helpful prayer that can guide both students and parents in praying through the beginning of the school year. You can read the prayer below in its entirety, and you can order the seven volume set of John Calvin’s Tracts and Letters by Banner of Truth here. Prayer on Preparing to Go to School O LORD, who art the fountain of all wisdom and learning, since thou of thy special goodness hast granted that my youth is instructed in good arts which may assist me to honest and holy living, grant also, by enlightening my mind, which otherwise labours under blindness, that I may be fit to acquire knowledge; strengthen my memory faithfully to retain what I may have learned: and govern my heart, that I may be willing and even eager to profit, lest the opportunity which thou now givest me be lost through my sluggishness. Be pleased therefore to infuse thy Spirit into me, the Spirit of understanding, of truth, judgment, and prudence, lest my study be without success, and the labour of my teacher be in vain. In whatever kind of study I engage, enable me to remember to keep its proper end in view, namely, to know thee in Christ Jesus thy Son; and may every thing that I learn assist me to observe the right rule of godliness. And seeing thou promisest that thou wilt bestow wisdom on babes, and such as are humble, and the knowledge of thyself on the upright in heart, while thou declarest that thou wilt cast down the wicked and the proud, so that they will fade away in their ways, I entreat that thou wouldst be pleased to turn me to true humility, that thus I may show myself teachable and obedient first of all to thyself, and then to those also who by thy authority are placed over me. Be pleased at the same time to root out all vicious desires from my heart, and inspire it with an earnest desire of seeking thee. Finally, let the only end at which I aim be so to qualify myself in early life, that when I grow up I may serve thee in whatever station thou mayest assign me. AMEN. The 1689 on God's law (19.2)

The guys are back on the 1689 in Chapter 19, paragraph 2, talking about the law of God written on the heart of man and its subsequent revelation on Mt. Sinai. Before they get into the three-fold division of the law and the three uses of the law (next week), Jimmy and Joe remind us that all are guilty for their disobedience to God’s commands, whether they received them at a mountain, were taught them by their parents, read them in the bible, or never had them articulated to them by anyone in their lives. Bonus Episode: Josh Harris

Bonus Episode: The guys recorded this episode earlier in the week, but the Founders Ministries Cinedoc controversy led us to change the release schedule. So here it is, Jimmy and Joe discussing Josh Harris and his announcement of his spiritual “deconstruction” or falling away from the Christian faith. What exactly did Josh say? How did the online community respond? How should we personally respond when people fall away? Plus, Joe argues with Dunkin’ Donuts.
