Life and Books and Everything: The Meaning of America

For this special Independence Day bonus episode, I go solo to talk about what America means and how Christians should relate to our nation. The most contentious debates that we currently have are about history, and we can’t agree on which story to tell about America. I also talk about two books that approach this problem of America’s story differently.

Should We Watch for Signs from God?

Some Christians seem to be always on the lookout for signs from God in creation or circumstances. Does the Bible encourage us in that search?

Sermon Sharing?

We pushed our discussion of the Baptist Catechism to Thursday so the guys could weigh in on the drama over Ed Litton’s use of JD Greer’s sermon content in one of his messages. (See the video below). Joe and Jimmy have addressed the issue of sermon stealing in the past, but wanted to discuss some of the issues here in this specific situation. What really happened? Was it sin, or just bad form? Why is this so important, and what’s up with research groups like Docent?Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/doctrine-and-devotion/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Blessed in the Garments of the Firstborn

As we saw last week, difficulties arise when we attempt to read the story of Jacob and Esau as a traditional morality tale. In reality, the book of Genesis does not present Jacob as a hero to be emulated, but as a great sinner in whom God’s mysterious grace is richly on display. And as we’ll see in Genesis 27, Jacob actually deceives his father by clothing himself in his brother’s garments and calling himself “Esau.” So then, why does God allow him to receive his brother’s blessing? On this episode, Shane Rosenthal continues his conversation with Dr. Iain Duguid, author of Living in the Grip of Relentless Grace. __________ For WHI listeners, we have a special Modern Reformation magazine subscription rate.
