Pentecost, the Holy Spirit, and the Great Commission

Before He returned to the Father, Christ commissioned His church to “go … and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:18). That day, the church received its commission, but it was on a later day—after Christ had ascended, on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came on the gathering of disciples—that the church began its mission. Only then, under the Spirit’s power, did they at last begin to preach the Gospel to “devout men from every nation under heaven” who were gathered in Jerusalem (Acts 2:4–5).

Alistair Begg Reflects on Songwriter Paul Simon

Dear Friend,
Allow me to begin by inviting you to join me in praying for a man who, although we have never met, has made an impact on my life since I was a teenager. The lyrics and melodies of Paul Simon have contributed significantly to the soundtrack of my life. I borrowed from one of his songs to try to convince the girl living three thousand miles away that I loved her: “My mind’s distracted and diffused, my thoughts are many miles away; they lie with you when you’re asleep and kiss you when you start the day.” It worked!

Is There More to Repentance Than Feeling Guilty?

Repentance is a key doctrine of Christian faith. From John the Baptist’s wilderness cry in the Gospels (Matt. 3:2, Mark 1:4, Luke 3:3) to Paul’s defense before King Agrippa (Acts 26:20) and beyond, it’s a regular topic of the New Testament’s teaching. In fact, right after His resurrection, Jesus told His disciples, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations” (Luke 24:46–47). A call to repentance, the Lord said, is a fundamental part of Gospel proclamation.

Lord, it belongs not to my careWhether I die or live;To love and serve Thee is my share,And this Thy grace must give.

What Do You Know about the Authentic Jesus of Nazareth?

Maybe you’ve heard this description somewhere: He was born in poverty, lived only thirty-three years, spent most of His life in obscurity, never wrote a book, never had any position in public life, was crucified with two thieves—and yet two thousand years later, millions still follow Him. It’s certainly not the whole story of Jesus Christ, but it is a helpful, thought-provoking summary of His legacy. Whether we’re convinced in our faith or questioning in our agnosticism, there’s no escaping the fact that Jesus of Nazareth has left an indelible mark on human history. All of us must reckon with the question of His identity.
