What is the purpose of spiritual gifts? The New Testament shows they are given to strengthen the church and are a picture of divine unity in the body of Christ. In light of this, it should grieve us when they become a point of division in our fellowships. I well remember when I was given that assignment. It was at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales. An American couple, who were in due course to become my in-laws, sponsored my attendance at an institute of biblical studies under the auspices of Campus Crusade for Christ (now CRU). I must confess that my initial response was somewhat negative: Why does there have to be a word count? Ought we not just tell our story without such pressure? But then I realized the purpose of the exercise was to encourage us to be able to share our faith in a form that was easy to understand.

Reaching into the culture with biblical truth is as important as ever. Our friends and neighbors are increasingly confused about God, Jesus, and the nature of humanity.

The 2022 State of Theology survey, conducted by Ligonier Ministries in partnership with LifeWay Research, confirms that a growing percentage of US adults have misconceptions about foundational biblical truths.

Few aspects of the Holy Spirit’s ministry have caused greater division in the church than those of Spirit baptism and spiritual fullness. Yet whenever the New Testament speaks of these things, it does so in terms of unity, not division. The baptism and filling with the Holy Spirit, rightly understood, should be sources of the church’s unity.
