What's A Baptist?

On this episode Jimmy and Joe answer the question, “What is a baptist?” What are the historic principles that identified baptists early on and throughout most of our history? What is a Southern Baptist? And what do the guys think of unifying principles of Southern Baptists today? Plus, Jimmy is unfamiliar with ties and the cops love Joe. The 1689 on Free Will (9.1-3)

Those with dark hearts can skip to the 5:00 mark to bypass the banter. Today the guys step into Chapter 9 of the 1689 Confession to talk about “free will.” How should we think of the will of mankind? In what ways is it free or bound? Can sinners do good? And how should this doctrine impact our hearts and how we evangelize? Clarifying Our Complementarianism

Alright, alright. Enough of you have asked us to clarify our position on women preachers that we have to conclude we were confusing and unclear at best. So here we have a quick conversation to set the record straight—as much as we can. What was up with that video on complementarianism? Do we agree with the Danvers Statement? And, can women preach?! Cancelling Church

The guys are kicking off 2019 with a bonus episode on the recent social media dust-up over some churches cancelling their Sunday services for the last Sunday of the year. Pastor JD Greer got the most push back for his church cancelling services, and much of that was less than charitable. The guys addressed this issue last year, but felt the need to bring it up again with a different approach in light of all the drama. What do Joe and Jimmy want to say to their friends who cancelled their services? But before they jump into that they talk about the new year and some new plans to make the most of it. Joe mentioned Theofit and Jimmy pointed out some resources shared by Barnabas Piper. Plus, Joe confused tweaking and twerking, and Jimmy… well, just click on this link. Pacificm and Paul Maxwell

Jimmy and Joe are very happy because their good friend, Dr. Paul Maxwell, is back in town! They grabbed him and forced him to come on the podcast to talk about pacifism. But first, Paul is given a chance address the “Red Pill Christian” movement. Then the guys get into it. Pacifism? Realism? Just war theory? Doesn’t Jesus’ command to “turn the other cheek” require a pacifistic ideology? Paul helps us think through the philosophy, the pragmatism, and some relevant Scripture that relate to the issues. If you missed it, you can listen to our earlier episode on Justified Violence. Plus, Jimmy has a rolodex for man servants. Julie Roys, Journalism, and James MacDonald

Today the guys share their conversation with journalist, author, and speaker Julie Roys. They discuss the role of journalism as it relates to local churches and prominent leaders, and her her current work investigating Harvest Bible Chapel and Pastor James MacDonald. If you find yourself unaware of the recent controversy and scandal surrounding the megachurch pastor, you can read Julie’s article in World Magazine, Hard Times at Harvest, and her recent follow up at her own blog. In short, pastor James MacDonald is accused by many former elders, staff, and church members of serious sin. Why would Julie write about all this? Isn’t it just gossip? We ask her, so listen in and find out. Why would we have Julie on to talk about all this? Because we care about the local church, and find ourselves ministering to . a lot of people who have come out of Harvest disillusioned and hurting. You can follow Julie on Twitter at @reachjulieroys. Be sure to check out Julie’s website at julieroys.com, and her book, Redeeming the Feminine Soul: God’s Surprising Vision for Womanhood.
